All the Basics

First, we get all the stuff we expected:

• Newer Core 2 Duo processors w/ 6MB L2 cache
• Front-side bus speed of 1066MHz
• Fast DDR3 memory
• NVIDIA 9400M graphics

First, they all have a black band around the screen like the iMac.

The silver one takes the iMac cues further, not only by matching its color (duh!), but also by having a black scroll wheel (except for the black nano, the others have a white wheel). I find the silver nano’s black wheel stands out like the Apple logo on the iMac, making quite a family resemblance.

There’s a new iMac competitor in town from Averatec. It’s name is incredibly bad if not descriptive: All-In-One PC.

Regarding other iMac wannabes, Gateway’s One was rather unimpressive in the specs department, but Dell’s One (yes, the same name as the Gateway) seemed to be a worthwhile machine. I wrote up the Dell here, but as you can see in that post’s subsequent updates it turned out to be a bit of a bust.

So let’s look at this latest entrant in the iMac ring.

It’s clear the strong points are supposed to be design (looks like a black iMac from the front), non-iMac features, and price. But it’s hard to examine this box and be very impressed.

Let’s consider what they tout:

Desktop-class processor.

Unlike the iMac, the AIOPC uses a desktop class Core 2 Duo instead of the mobile version, After the Dell, however, I’m not falling for that again.

First, it only runs at 2GHz; the iMac’s processors soundly beat that. Second, the desktop models run hotter, which should be obvious by looking at the sides and back (above) of this thing. It’s deep, and the back is ugly with three sets of holes. Needs to be, though, in order to support the larger thermal envelope of the desktop CPU.

So why use a desktop processor? I’m assuming cost.

22-inch screen.

Sounds nicer than the 20-inch Apple offers at the same price, but it’s just 1680 x 1050, same as the iMac.

2GB RAM expanadble to 4GB.

It’s a shame that Vista can only use 3.12GB of RAM. (Another dirty little Microsoft Windows secret no one talks about.)

TV tuner and remote.

This is something Dell also pushed, and it doesn’t seem to be helping the Dell any. Further, it’s listed as optional but I cannot find a price for it on the web site.

Now let’s consider what they don’t tout:

• No Bluetooth.
• Wireless is b/g, not the “n” variety.

In my opinion, these are pretty big communications drawbacks for a “modern” machine today.

• No Firewire

I guess you can watch movies with the built-in tuner, but there’s no sense importing your own video because your kids are too ugly to film anyway (and don’t even get me started on your pets).

• Unknown amount of video RAM

It’s an nVidea chipset, but how much video memory is a mystery.

• Speakers

Built-in 6W amp for the speakers? Please. Sure, the iMac is no powerhouse but it’s 24W amp drives the speakers pretty darn well.

• No software.

At least Dell tried to counter iLife via an Adobe software suite. Averatec doesn’t try to compete here at all. They include nothing. Ouch!

Summary:

I just don’t see the attraction in this thing, especially at the price. It starts at the same $1199 as Apple’s iMac, and doesn’t offer much. A few more USB slots, a media reader. These are nice to have maybe, but over a better processor, firewire, audio and networking? I don’t think so. Heck, even if they threw in the TV tuner I’d still feel the same way.

Regarding performance, at the same price Apple’s base model — with it’s 20% faster processor — will likely beat this thing pretty handily. And moving to Apple’s next in line for $150 will crush it. Totally, completely, crush it. And you’ll be able to do more in both cases because you have the great iLife suite right out of the box!

If you must have a TV tuner on your next computer, get an iMac and add one of the external tuners available.

If you must have a TV Tuner on your next computer and it must be a PC, look at Dell’s One.

In my view, the AIOPC just doesn’t cut it.

OK, I run Software Updater but it doesn’t register. No biggie, maybe they just haven’t rolled it to the auto-updater yet. I’ll check it out and download directly instead.

The Release Notes are pretty clear:

This update is for iMac computers with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro… graphics card installed,

Yep, that’s me.

running Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later.

Me too.

Perfect. Mine’s currently 113-B2250F-219, so it looks like I need the update.

Download it, run it, and I get this:

Rats! Well, that explains why Software Updater didn’t find it.

What other criteria (that Apple doesn’t specify) preclude me from needing this? Or is the prerequisite check in the installer broken, and it won’t apply to my system even though I need it?

Whatever the case, I’m not alone in having this problem.

A quick summary:

• That they broke the 3GHz barrier is nice.
• That they now have a 512MB graphics card option is very nice.
• That the prices remained the same, and you get much more value, is even nicer still.

But, to me, the biggest thing is that they made the switch from the mobile to the desktop processor line.

This is a big change, in my opinion. Front-side bus is now 1,066 MHz instead of 800 MHz (and memory access is now 800 MHz instead of 667 MHz). I also suspect they get cost savings by using desktop processors.

What I believe is significant here is that the thermal envelope of the iMac is compatible with the latest Intel desktop processors. It used to be iMacs always used a mobile processor set. It was the only way to get that kind of performance in a computer that thin (though they always used desktop hard drives and monitors).

Seems to me with less heat generated Apple could either have stayed with the mobile sets and once again made the iMacs thinner, or they could keep the relatively big (for laptop electronics) enclosures and go ahead with not only desktop processors but also a much faster graphics processor.

They chose wisely, in my opinion. It’s not that I don’t think the iMac should ever get thinner, but in this case I think it made more sense to go with desktop guts in a desktop machine.

[UPDATE #2:] So it appears Apple got a special version of the 45nm Penryn for Santa Rosa that pretty much has all the specs of Intel’s unreleased Montevina processor except that it runs hotter.

In short, this allowed Apple to update the iMacs today with performance other desktops won’t have available for a couple months when Montevina comes out.

The two salient points I take from this are:

1. True to the nature of my original post, Apple is trading a thinner design for the ability to take more heat.
2. Yet another “special” CPU Intel is making for Apple. And much like the one for the MacBook Air, it allows Apple to do something others can’t yet pull off.

With all the talk about the updated Mac Pros coming with 8 cores standard, I think one thing has been understated: There’s still a 4-core version.

What struck me most when looking at the new standard Mac Pro configuration was that, at $2,799 it was $300 more than the old standard configuration. It’s very unusual for Apple to do this. Updated models usually offer more while being the same price or less. To be sure, there are so many improvements the extra $300 is well spent, but still it seemed strange.

Comparing the old 4 to the new 4

But when you look at the configurable options, you’ll see there’s a 4-core model for $500 less. And this isn’t just the older 4-core machine, but a new one with all the updates of the 8-core models sans one Xeon processor. So this is the machine to compare with the previous standard configuration to get a feeling for the kind of bang for the buck Apple is now providing.

When comparing this new $2,299 model to the old standard, the value Apple just added to their Pro line is put sharply in focus:

• A 2.8 GHz 45nm Xeon 4-core CPU vs. Two 2.66 Dual-core CPUs
• Faster front-side bus (1.66 vs. 1.33)
• Faster memory access
• 320 GB hard drive vs. 250
• ATI HD 2600 XT vs. Nvidia 7300 GT
• 2 GB RAM vs. 1
• Built-in Bluetooth

And while the processor speed may seem minor, keep in mind the new cores are Intel’s latest processor; increased performance is not just a function of clock speed.

You get all the above for $200 less than the old standard configuration! Clearly, Apple added a ton of value to the Mac Pro this week.

Widening the iMac and Pro gap.

What I also like about these Mac Pros is that the “base” models lead even Apple’s best iMac (the Extreme 24-inch). I may never need a Mac Pro, and love my iMac, but it always puzzled me that Apple didn’t widen the gap a little bit between the iMac high-end and the Pro low-end. Until the new Mac Pros were announced:

• iMac 24 came initially with the same graphics card as the Pro (Nvidia 7300), and since August a much better one (HD 2600 Pro)
• iMac 24 and Mac Pros came with 1MB RAM
• iMac 24 since August was available in a faster clock speed (2.8 GHz)

Apple has corrected this: The base Pro’s HD 2600 XT graphics card is an improved version of the 2600 Pro; The Pros now come with 2MB RAM standard; The slowest Pro clock speed is now 2.8 GHz. These may seem like small things, but a Mac Pro buyer now knows that even when buying the lowest model it still has better graphics, more RAM, and more processing power than even the best iMac available. If I was a Pro buyer I would think that’s important.

The fact is the latest 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo Extreme iMac faired pretty well — maybe too well — against the old standard Mac Pro (i.e., the Quad 2.66 configuration). That will no longer be the case, and I think it’s an important distinction for Apple’s Pro line.

Bridging the iMac and Pro gap.

Veering off topic, this is where I’d write about Apple bridging the iMac/Pro lines with some kind of mini-tower. Wouldn’t have to be a traditional “tower”, just a headless Mac with expandability. But I’ve been wanting them to do this since 1999 so I won’t hold my breath…

While technically not available until Monday, 11/19, you can actually pre-order Dell’s new XPS ONE PC now for shipping later this month. Gateway’s latest AIO machine is also called the One, so I wonder why Dell used the same name. Will Gateway sue? Can they? Would they even care? I didn’t write up Gateway’s machine because, frankly, it’s unimpressive. Only a 19” screen, weaker processors by iMac standards and too expensive for what you get.

Based on the information available on Dell’s ordering site for the One, here are a few observations on the machines and a comparison to Apple’s latest iMacs:

Processors – The two low-end Ones use mobile Core 2 Duos at 2.2 GHz on an 800MHz front-side bus. Since they start at $1,499 that makes them slower than what Apple uses (2.4 GHz) at the same price. However, the high-end Ones use desktop C2D processors at 2.33 GHz on a 1333 MHz FSB. Apple’s two high-end models use 2.4 or 2.8 GHz mobile processors on an 800 MHz FSB. How much of a difference will the slower clock but higher bus speed make? Don’t know, but it’s an interesting design choice by Dell. (Now we know, see the update below.)

Display – The Ones all have a 20” display; not sure why they don’t offer something bigger. It doesn’t say the resolution, but I assume it’s 1680 x 1050. Apple offers 20” and 24” displays.

Graphics – This is where Dell saved their money, and it’s too bad. The two low-end Ones use integrated graphics, and that’s a shame. With more and more use of a GPU in software these days, and more sophisticated photo and video software used even by the average Joe, I think a desktop machine should have a dedicated video card. Certainly one starting at $1,499 should. Meanwhile, the two high-end Ones come with the ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro, which is still a step behind the lowest-priced iMac ($1,199 with an HD 2400 XT). Think about that: Apple put a better graphics card in their low-end model (at a price Dell doesn’t even offer) than Dell put into their high-end models! Meanwhile, all other iMacs come with the next-generation HD 2600 Pro.

Wireless – All models include a wireless keyboard and mouse. They also include Bluetooth and b/g/n networking. Dell should have chucked the wireless KB and mouse (from Apple they’re $59) and put in better graphics.

Memory – All models include 2GB RAM. The truth is Vista Home Premium really needs this, but it’s a good decision nonetheless. The iMacs are 1 GB except for 2GB in the Extreme edition.

Drives – For the four Ones it’s 250, 250, 320, 500. I see no option in the BTO to change any of these. A shame, in my opinion, though these are good sizes. Apple offers 250, 320, 320, and 500, with BTO options up to 1TB.

TV Tuner – All Ones include a TV tuner and remote. Personally, I just don’t think it’s of much use to the majority of people getting a computer. Still, there it is. All iMacs include a remote.

Media Reader – All Ones have an 8-in-1 card reader. I wish Apple would put these in the iMac. Lots of people are buying a computer for that whole “hub of my digital life” thing Apple talks about. A card reader makes it a lot easier to get your digital life into your machine.

Software – Dell stepped up here, and it was a smart move. They include Adobe Elements Studio on every model. Until I switched to Mac, I ran Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements and can tell you they’re fine products. Studio also includes Soundbooth CS3; I ran a trial of that and found it be a good product as well. Clearly, this is Dell’s way of countering iLife on the iMac. Instead of relying on Vista’s weak photo and movie software they got something that could actually compete with iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband. Further, the two low-end Ones get MS Works (OK, OK, big deal), and the two high-end Ones get MS Office Student and Teacher addition. Bottom line is if you buy either high-end model you’ve got all the basics covered with great programs in all categories. Well done, Dell. All iMacs includes the excellent iLife, and iWorks is available for $79.

Price – The One’s price seems reasonable, and a good value. Starting at $1,499 you get a 2.2 GHz C2D mobile processor, the Adobe suite, MS Works, built-in TV tuner, 2 GB RAM and a 250 GB hard drive. The weakest link, by far, is the on-board graphics. I especially think Vista and the Adobe suite will be hampered by the lack of video oomph. The next model is $250 more and kind of silly to me; it simply increases the warranty and includes wireless headphones. The next model is the one I like the best. At $1,999 it drops the headphones but adds the desktop 2.33 GHz C2D, the ATI 2400 HD Pro, a 320 GB drive, and MS Office Student and Teacher. Finally, there’s a $2,399 model that bumps the drive up to 500 GB and adds a Blu-Ray DVD.

Summary:
It looks to me like Dell paid attention to the latest iMac announcements. Their pricing is pretty competitive. For $1,499 you can get a 20” iMac or One. If the inclusion of Adobe Elements Studio negates the iLife advantage, then the One has advantages in RAM, the card reader and the TV tuner. The iMac has advantages in the faster C2D processor, ATI HD 2600 Pro card (a huge advantage over built-in graphics), and a 320 GB drive. Take your pick, but I believe the iMac has a clear performance advantage.

At the higher end, take the One’s $1,999 model and the iMac $1,799 model. To the latter add iWork; now it’s $1,878. The Dell has advantages in RAM, the card reader, the TV tuner, and the desktop processor. (This is not an advantage, see update below.) The iMac has advantages in the 24” screen (which is a big thing, no pun intended), faster ATI HD 2600 Pro graphics, faster processor (see update below), and a lower price. Again, take your pick but both very nice machines.

As for aesthetics, I like the look of the Dell except for the speaker “ears” hanging off the side. These are already wide-screen machines, so making them even wider with the speakers looks awkward to me. Still, I think it’s a decent looking machine though I like the aluminum iMac look better. One aesthetic I can’t gage is volume. I expect the high-end Ones with a desktop processor to probably need some fanning. While even the iMac 24” with C2D Extreme at 2.8GHz makes not a sound, it’ll be interesting to see how quiet the Ones are.

Only time will tell regarding overall quality, performance (we know about performance, see update below), etc., but on the surface I think Dell is off to a good start with the One. They certainly appear to have avoided most of Gateway’s mistakes in terms of features and price.

[UPDATE:] C|NET has reviewed the Dell high-end (Blu-Ray drive) model, and the iMac 2.4GHz (with an extra GB of RAM added) soundly beat it on every performance test.

In some ways I’m actually a little disappointed in this. I thought the move to a desktop processor was a pretty bold one for Dell, and while I had concerns with extra fan noise (or even overheating), I though that the slightly slower clock speed (2.3GHz) would be made up for by the much faster bus speed (1333 MHz vs. 800). Obviously not. I guess Dell didn’t do their homework enough, or perhaps Apple did.

Maybe Dell just went with bottom-line savings (I assume desktop processors are still less expensive than their mobile counterparts). Either way, Dell’s high-end configuration got trounced by Apple’s mid-level machine (remember, Apple’s high-end is a 2.8 GHz C3D Extreme).

In my article I talked about the performance advantage the $1,499 iMac should have over the same-priced Dell. Given these scores from C|NET on Dell’s best, I’d think the comparison of the $1.5K models would be an embarrassment for Dell.

C|NET does agree with me on software:

“As it did with its new XPS 420 desktop, Dell again closes the gap with Apple on this system with its software. Argue about Vista vs. the new Leopard OS all you want, but we’re referring to Adobe’s Elements Studio suite that competes strongly against Apple’s iLife 08 software. No other PC vendor offers an answer to iLife, and this remains a selling point for Dell.”

As I said, the Adobe suite is nice. Mac Daily News poo-poohs the software, but they’re wrong. However, the Adobe suite is not a package that takes to slow machines kindly. If I had any complaint it was its sluggishness. The fact that even the high-end Dell is not an impressive performer does not bode well for it. Further, I think the Adobe suite on the entry level might be exasperating. Note to Dell: don’t include useful software if you can’t include hardware to run it on.

So, does the new performance data take the shine off these new Dells for me. Yes, a little. I think Dell sunk perhaps too much money into software and went cheap on the graphics and CPU power. Perhaps they had no choice. They needed a counter to iLIfe, and they needed to keep the prices in line with iMacs. I guess shooting for the iMac isn’t so easy after all, but I still believe Dell came a lot closer to the target than Gateway did.

[UPDATE #2] PC Magazine just published a biased review and likes the One better than the iMac. How do I know it’s biased? They used the older Adobe Photoshop CS2 as one of the tests. Since this does not run natively on Intel Macs, the Dell was able to beat the iMac (though not by much). Pretty pathetic on PC Mag’s part, but whatever.

Even with the grossly unfair testing, the iMac still won half the tests. Bottom line is that even when running Photoshop natively the One could only beat the iMac by eight seconds running Photoshop in emulation! Heck, even PC Mag’s own scores show the iMac over three times faster on the 3D benchmark test! In other words, the iMac blows the doors off the One, just as C|NET had shown.

But all of that is glossed over as the reviewer is awe-struck by the AIO design, saying

“The XPS One shows once and for all that the future of desktop PCs is in the all-in-one form factor.”

Um, no, the iMac showed that years ago. He also says

“Your friends will walk in the room and ask, “Where’s the rest of the PC?””

You mean like “Where did the computer go?”, Apple’s tag line for the iMac years ago? Geez, is this guy 19? Did he just start reviewing PCs? Maybe that’s why he hasn’t saved enough money from his paper route to get the current version of Photoshop. Pathetic.

Oh well, I guess sometimes “PC Mag” has to live up to its name, but this is very blatant bias in my opinion.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the overall performance of the latest iMac is amazing given what was considered top of the line just two years ago. A MacNN article points out how the iMac 2.8 GHz Extreme falls just shy of a current Xserve Quad-Core Xeon 2.0GHz. Pretty impressive stuff. Further, the article states:

“the top-end Mid-2007 iMac is faster than the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) with two dual-core G5 processors at 2.5 GHz”

As in my previous article, this thing is easily besting a Quad-Core 2.5GHz PowerMac from less than two years ago! Wow.

I’m primarily posting to ensure I will have no problems using Firefox Mac with Blogger (Safari doesn’t work with Blogger at all, on the Mac or PC).

I’ll post details on the machine in the coming days. From the box to the Internet was less than 15 minutes. As of right now I’ve imported my 2,700 photos and already got them all categorized into 55 iPhone Events. I’ve imported my 7,000 songs, as well as my movies and TV shows, into iTunes. Got all my email working fine and imported my contacts from a CSV file created in Outlook. Imported my bookmarks with no issue.

Only software I’ve installed is Firefox and Graphic Converter. I used to use GC when I had a Mac before (I use PolyView on the PC) and didn’t hesitate to get it again now that I’m back in the Mac fold.

This screen is gorgeous and I love the glossy. I already knew that from one of my laptops having it. Reflection is rarely a problem and the beautiful, richer colors make it superior to the matte screens in my opinion. I also love the iMac’s keyboard. It’s quiet and has a firm touch. My old keyboard was huge, however, so I need to adjust my thumb reaching for the space key.

I need to call it a day. The best news of all is that my daughter is in her Summer dance recital this weekend (in seven dances) so I will have a boatload of photos and video to find out just how the new iPhoto and iMovie really stack up. I can already tell you I love editing in iPhoto’s full screen mode.

I always felt the white frame around the screen was a bit of a distraction, but now the chassis is aluminum, and there’s a beautiful black border around the screen. This not only looks great but also hides the built-in camera and microphone for an even smoother, cleaner finish.

So I ordered the 24″ with the 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme.

For those of you who’ve paid attention to my blog, you know that I currently have no Macs in the house (well, the iPhone). There are two laptops with XP Pro and XP Home. I know XP well, Vista doesn’t even remotely interest me, so I’m going back to the Mac after an absence.

I’ve held off ordering to see what the iMac upgrade would bring, and am glad I did. The prices have fallen considerably. It’s not just the base price of the 24″ being $1,799 to the old model’s $1,999. That initial $200 savings gets even larger when you start adding on items.

Consider that the old 24″ iMac had no “upscale” model to start with, so if you wanted it “maxed out” you had to:

• upgrade the processor to 2.33 GHz,
• upgrade memory from 1 to 2GB,
• upgrade the hard drive from 250 to, in my case, 750GB,
• upgrade the graphics card from a 128MB model to to a 256MB model, and
• add a wireless keyboard and mouse for $59 each.

Starting from that $1,999 base model, the resulting machine was close to $2,900, and included no additional software, tax, or shipping.

By comparison, the new iMac has an upscale model for $2,299 that already includes:

• the max processor (2.8GHz),
• 2GB memory,
• a 500GB drive (so the upgrade to 750GB is less expensive),
• the max graphics card, and
• the wireless mouse is just $20, the keyboard just $30.

My entire package, including iWork ’08, a year’s subscription to .Mac, tax and expedited shipping, is less than $2,900. We’re talking many hundreds of dollars saved on a system that’s dramatically improved in all areas, with software (iLife ’08) that’s dramatically improved as well.

Yes, this is the “transition” Tim Cook spoke of on the 3Q analysts call a couple weeks ago. No question these will not bring in the margins of the old models. On the other hand, they ought to sell a ton of them, and I’m one of the first buyers.

The only bad news is the Extreme models have a five-week delay; my ship date is slated for 9/12.

I have no doubt there will be some Mac fans unimpressed by today’s announcements. Maybe you should run my XP boxes for a while. Seriously, as I monitored the presentation today I was hopeful for another hard drive bay or maybe a replaceable graphics card in the iMac. However, with up to 1TB of storage available, and a respectable graphics card already in place, one has to wonder just how much is supposed to be available for a “consumer” machine? When you consider all the improvements for hundreds of dollars less, at some point you just need to STFU and enjoy it.

[UPDATE:] From playing around on the Apple Store website I found the cause for delay is the wireless keyboard. If I remove that from an order then the estimated ship date is 3-5 days instead of weeks. I need a wireless keyboard, but not necessarily immediately. I’ll have to dwell on this and maybe call Apple tomorrow to change the order, getting the regular keyboard initially and ordering the wireless separately.

If you’re wondering why the The Street’s Scott Moritz’ garbage about iPhone production being cut back — and the resulting drop in Apple stock — is not in my list, it’s because it was covered so much elsewhere. Besides, most of the coverage ends with the sentiment that they wonder why Moritz has a job, or why The Street isn’t worried about its reputation. In my opinion the reason is simple: The Street and Moritz are doing exactly what they set out to do. Indeed, it’s difficult to think otherwise when the story had such huge implications but was published on the flimsiest of evidence. I’m sure we’ll see more of this, so get used to it.

OK, on to other stuff that occurred in my absence…

Apple to introduce new iMacs (and new Macs?) on August 7.
A special media event related solely to Macs, not iPods or iPhones. Is this the long-awaited refresh (and remodel) on the iMac line? Sure. Will it also include new versions of iLife and iWork? Maybe. But what else? I’ve seen others talk of a new MacBook Pro line, or at least a MacBook Pro ultra portable.

Personally, I think if Apple wants to knock our socks off — and really see sales spike — it would be with a new “headless” iMac. In other words, expand their computer quadrant to allow a slot between the consumer (iMac) and the professional (Mac Pro) desktop models. If Apple introduces such a machine, and prices it in line with what an expandable consumer machine should cost (something they did not do with the G4 cube), there’s a 100% chance I will buy one that very day.

AT&T and eMusic ink an OTA deal.
Now you can get your obscure music for six times as much! This announcement almost made me laugh when I read it, though it may not be the dumbest mobile music deal that went down this week (see below).

I love music, and I love eMusic. I’ve been a member for a year and a half and get 40 songs a month for $10. For the rocket scientists among you, that’s 25 cents a song. A quarter. Two bits. Yes, it’s all Indie stuff, and most people will not find the music they want here. For me, since I love all kinds of music, I have no issue with this and always seem to find stuff every month. Even so, it’s primarily worth it because each song is only 25 cents. But now, thanks to AT&T and eMusic, I can get those same songs for $1.50 each. This is a deal? I can’t believe any self-respecting eMusic subscriber would go for this at all. Info Week misses again on “eleventh hour” Apple patches for iPhone.
You gotta love Info Week. Apple releases an iPhone update, but IW says it’s really just a quick rush to avoid being slammed at Black Hat. Is there anybody who didn’t know Apple would be slammed at Black Hat regardless? So Apple should now hold off on patches, releasing them only at times when they might take less perceived heat? Oh brother. The only thing that should be held back is Info Week’s Mac coverage.

Thurrott almost impressed with iTunes sales of three billion.
Paul says it’s “big news” (of course) but then as usual knocks Apple for their success. What I really love is his slamming iTunes’ “lousy” 128K AAC format. Paul doesn’t seem to understand that not all 128K encoding formats are created equal. That 128K AAC file is on par with eMusic’s 192K MP3 file.

Oh, and Paul doesn’t “prefer” the AAC format anyway. Well, yes, Paul, I can see where a Microsoft apologist would prefer things stay the same as much as possible, but the fact is AAC was developed as the successor to MP3 (it is, after all, MP4) and has specific advantages over the older format. I’m just glad Paul can “live with” AAC nonetheless.

AC/DC goes the wrong way.
It’s not just the labels with their heads up their ass. Some bands’ skulls are positioned firmly up their rectal cavities as well. If AC/DC got all their money up front, more power to them, and Verizon will be taking a bath. No one, not even the most die-hard AC/DC fan, is going to select his phone and carrier based solely on the availability of 18 albums. And you have to buy them as complete albums! (This bit alone is likely why iTunes would have no part of the deal.) Morons. I buy albums most of the time, but am in the minority. An entire generation is coming up that sees no benefit from an album whatsoever, and who can blame them?

If AC/DC is getting their money as a percentage of sales, then they’re screwed. There won’t be any, boys. Not enough to matter. It’s P2P for you, just like it is now. You shoulda gone with singles as well as albums, and used the guy that’s selling songs at the clip of one BILLION every six months. Smaller piece of a larger pie, and all that.

Microsoft asks Mac users to try iWork instead of Office.
If iWork makes Pages a bit more Word processor friendly (it’s already layout-happy), and adds a decent Spreadsheet module, is there any doubt this will get people to consider a switch? They’d need some decent interoperability, but that shouldn’t be too hard (and even Microsoft never gets it right all the time). While it can be argued Office will benefit very little from being a Universal application, it’s revealing that Microsoft is the last major player to the game if only because it exposes their MBU for what it really is: A shell.

There are many Mac users looking to go Microsoft-free. Office was one of the few bullets left in Microsoft’s Mac gun, why shoot blanks now? Stupid. If you need Office for work, just consider it one of those Windows applications you need Boot Camp for until iWork (or neoOffice) can fill that role.

Mary Jo Foley thinks Windows home server has mass appeal.
Yes, because I know my friends are always asking me about when they can get their own server and setup their own storage networks, file sharing, and print server functionality. They constantly express their desire for a new PC running more Windows software. Something that’s $800, perhaps, that they’ll need to configure, and then try to hide in a corner of a room while training their ears to ignore the sound.

I don’t know who supplies what Mary Jo is smoking, but it must be some good shit. The truth is, Mary Jo, the best home server available today is called the Airport Extreme. Plug it in and set it up as your WiFi and firewall, then plug in a USB disk (or disks), and a USB (or Ethernet) printer, and all of these items are seen on your network (Macs and PCs) without configuration. The thing is tiny, quiet, and inexpensive.

If there is a market in the home for a file/print server, this is it. Microsoft’s mindset that every tech issue requires yet another PC running yet another variant of Windows is part of their problem, and why they can’t come up with solutions anybody really wants.
